"The Lord, the Lord lives!" 27 For behold, I kept watch over them so as to harm them
and not to do them good. All Judah, those who reside in the land of Egypt, will suffer
failure by sword and by famine until they have failed. 28 Those who are saved from the
sword will return to the land of Judah few in number, and the remnants of Judah, who
were established in the land of Egypt in order to reside there, will know whose word will
remain. 29 This will be a sign for you that I will make an inspection of you resulting in
evil things.´ 30 So said the Lord: `Behold, I am giving Hophra king of Egypt into the
hands of his enemy and into the hands of those who are seeking his soul, just as I gave
Zedekiah king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his enemy
and the one who was seeking his soul.´"
31 The word which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch son of Neriah when he
wrote these words in the scroll from the mouth of Jeremiah in the fourth year of
Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: 32 "So said the Lord regarding you, O Baruch.
33 You said, `Alas, alas, for the Lord added trouble upon toil for me! I lay down in
groanings; I did not find rest.´ 34 `Say to him, "So said the Lord: `Behold, I am taking
down those whom I built, and I am plucking out those whom I planted. 35 Will you seek
great things for yourself? Do not seek them, for behold, I am bringing wicked things
over all flesh,´ says the Lord, `and I will give your soul as a discovery in every place
where you proceed.´"´"
Jeremiah 52 A
1 During the twenty-first year of Zedekiah, when he started to reign, he reigned for
eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah from
Libnah. 4 It happened that, in the ninth year of his reign, in the ninth B month, on the
tenth of the month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his force came against
Jerusalem. They made a palisade around it and built a wall all around it with
rectangular stones. 5 The city came into distress until the eleventh year of King
Zedekiah; 6 on the ninth of the month, the famine became severe in the city, and there
were no loaves of bread for the people of the land. 7 The city was broken into, and all
the military men came out at night by the way of the gate between the wall and the
fortification, which was by the garden of the king. The Chaldeans were over the city all
around; they went by the way to the Arabah. 8 The force of the Chaldeans pursued after
the king and overtook him in the region beyond Jericho; all his servants dispersed from
him. 9 They took the king and brought him to the king of Babylon in Riblah, and he
spoke to him with judgment. 10 The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah
before his eyes, and he slaughtered all the rulers of Judah in Riblah. 11 He blinded the
eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in fetters; the king of Babylon brought him to Babylon
and gave him to the milling house until the day he died.
12 In the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, Nebuzaradan, the chief butcher who
stood in front of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 13 He burned the house of the
Lord, the house of the king, and all the houses of the city; he burned with fire every
