famine, and from the sword, into the hands of their enemies who are seeking their
souls. They will cut them down with the edge of a sword. I will not spare them, and I
will not have compassion on them."´
8 You A will say to this people, `Thus says the Lord: "Behold, I have given before your
face the way of life and the way of death. 9 The one who sits in this city will die by a
sword and by famine. The one who goes out to support the Chaldeans who have
enclosed you will live; his soul will be for him as plunder, and he will live. 10 For I have
set my face against this city for wicked things and not for good things; it will be
delivered up into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will consume it with fire."´
11 O house of the king of Judah, hear the word of the Lord. 12 O house of David, thus
says the Lord: `Execute judgment in the morning; guide and rescue the ravaged one
from the hand of the one who wronged him, so that my wrath might not be kindled like
fire and burn, and there be no one who will quench it. 13 Behold, I am against you who
reside in the valley of Zur, the plain, those who say, "Who will scare us, or who will
enter our residence?" 14 I will kindle a fire in its forest, and it will devour everything
around it.´
Jeremiah 22
1 Thus says the Lord: `Go and descend to the house of the king of Judah; there you
will speak this word. 2 You will say, "Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah who sits
on the throne of David, you, your house, your people, and those who go in at these
gates. 3 Thus says the Lord: `Perform justice and righteousness; rescue the ravaged
one from the hand of the one who wronged him. Do not overpower a guest, an orphan,
and a widow; do not be ungodly, and do not pour out innocent blood in this place. 4 For
if you perform this word, kings sitting on the throne of David and mounted on chariots
and horses will enter by the gates of this house, they, their servants, and their people.
5 But if you do not perform these words, I have sworn by myself,´ says the Lord, `that
this house will be for desolation.´ 6 For thus says the Lord against the house of the king
of Judah: `You are Gilead to me, the beginning of Lebanon. Surely I will put you into a
desert, as cities which will not be inhabited. 7 I will bring over you an eliminating man
and his axe, and they will cut down your choice cedars and throw them into the fire.
8 Nations will pass through this city, and each one will say to his neighbor, "Why did the
Lord do this to this great city?" 9 They will say, "Because they abandoned the testament
of the Lord their God, and they worshiped strange gods and served them."´
10 Do not weep for one who is dead or lament for him; weep with weeping for the
one who goes out, for he will not again return and will not see his native land. 11 For
thus says the Lord concerning Shallum son of Josiah, who reigns instead of Josiah his
father, who came out of this place: `He will not again turn back to there, 12 but in the
place where I deported him, there he will die; he will not again see this land.
13 The one who builds his house not with righteousness and his upper rooms not with
judgment, who works at his neighbor’s place for nothing and will not pay him back his
wage, 14 you built for yourself a symmetrical house, ventilated upper rooms vented with
