from the surrounding countries, and they spread their nets over him; he was caught in
their ruin. 9 They placed him in a muzzle and in a cage; he came to the king of Babylon,
and he threw him into prison so that his voice might not be heard on the mountains of
Israel.
10 Your mother was like a vine, like a bloom on a pomegranate tree planted in water;
her fruit and her blossom originated from much water. 11 She became a strong rod over
a tribe of governors, and was exalted in her size in the midst of logs; she saw her size
in the multitude of her branches. 12 She was broken off in fury; she was thrown out on
the ground, and a burning wind dried up her choice parts. Vengeance was taken on
her, and the rod of her strength dried up; fire devoured it. 13 Now they have planted her
in the desert, in a waterless land. 14 Fire came out of a rod of her choice parts and
consumed her; there was no rod of strength in her.´ The tribe exists as an illustration
of lamentation, and it will continue to exist as a lamentation."
Ezekiel 20
1 It happened that, in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the
month, A men came from the elders of the house of Israel to inquire of the Lord, and
they sat before my face. 2 The word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 3 "Son of
man, speak to the elders of Israel; you will say to them, `Thus says the Lord: "Did you
come to inquire of me? As I live, I will not answer you," says the Lord.´ 4 Will I take
vengeance on them? Son of man, testify to them the lawless acts of their fathers. 5 You
will say to them, `Thus says the Lord: "From the day I chose the house of Israel, and
was made known to the seed of the house of Jacob, and was known to them in the
land of Egypt, and helped them with my hand, saying, `I am the Lord your God,´ 6 on
that day I helped them with my hand in order to bring them out of the land of Egypt
into the land which I prepared for them, a land flowing with milk and honey; it is a
honeycomb beyond every land. 7 I said to them, `Let each one throw away the
abominations of his eyes, and do not be defiled with the habits of Egypt; I am the Lord
your God.´ 8 They stood apart from me and did not want to listen to me; they did not
throw away the abominations of their eyes and did not abandon the habits of Egypt.
I said that I would pour out my fury upon them, that I would complete my wrath in
them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 I acted so that my name might not be
thoroughly profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose midst they are, among whom
I was known to them in their sight in order to bring them out of the land of Egypt. 10 I
brought them out of the land of Egypt, B and I brought them into the desert. 11 I gave
them my ordinances, and I made my righteous decrees known to them, which a man
will perform and live by them. 12 I gave them my sabbaths to exist as a sign between
me and them, for them to know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 I said to the
house of Israel in the desert, `Go by my ordinances,´ yet they did not go, and they
rejected my righteous decrees, which a man will perform and live by them, and they
profaned my sabbaths exceedingly. I said that I would pour out my fury upon them in
