STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
Community Meeting. Another form of town hall, with formal invitations to community
leaders and key opinion leaders, those individuals connected to service clubs and
associations, religious organizations, and small businesses central to the community. While
encouraging an open dialogue on drinking water issues, the focus is on engagement,
making connections, and opening information flows among the utility and community
stakeholders.
Focus Group. A planned coming together of a small number of stakeholders to dialogue on
a specific area or issue related to the drinking water utility. This event is by invitation.
Forum. Periodic meeting or gathering for purposes of discussion, dialogue or debate.
Means of sharing information, knowledge and research while focusing on common interests
and challenges.
Community Forum. Provides networking opportunities and increased visibility of
initiatives and projects underway. Opportunity for the utility to inform the public about
forthcoming or specific projects underway.
Forum Series. Brings policy-makers together with practitioners, advocates and
consumers with the opportunity over time of involving geographically dispersed
stakeholders.
Knowledge Exchange Forum. Planned process, specifically: (1) the group meets to
review objectives and establishes ground rules; (2) breaks out into domain-specific
discussion groups to share practices and experiences; (3) reconvenes to discuss
commonalities and differences; and (4) works together to create an action plan for
improved collaboration and knowledge exchange between key stakeholders.
Special Forums between policy makers and utility members. Defined topics. Inclusive
of larger stakeholder input and participation as appropriate.
Stakeholder Resource Kit. A collection of various information in hard copy and/or virtual
format for distribution to stakeholders.
Symposium. Brings stakeholders involved in a specific interest area or project together to
share opinions, philosophies and conversation. In this context, this would be a major event
on a mutually agreed-upon topic. For example, a full-day workshop designed by and for
multiple stakeholder involvement.
Pairing Symposia. Provides opportunity for individual utility members and a subset of
the stakeholder group to come together at a location within the community. Event would
be jointly planned with a structured presentation by a utility member and a structured
presentation by a member of the stakeholder group, thus demonstrating two frames of
