be constructed. For this we need passion and perspective. It scarcely will
be easy. It cannot be done without a fundamental reassessment of strategy
on the part of the antisystemic movements, another subject I have not been
able to discuss here. (See, however, Wallerstein 1984, Part II.) But it will
also not be done unless those who say that they strive to understand social
reality, that is, we, the historical social scientists, will be ready to repeat,
in science as in politics, Weber’s final plea, ‘in spite of all!’
