Esto le costaría una cantidad considerable de dinero a la empresa Disney, a la ciudad de Orlando y al estado de la Florida. Reflexionemos sobre el turista que viene a Puerto Rico y su efecto en nuestra economía. En 1993 Puerto Rico recibió 3.869 millones de visitantes y éstos gastaron $1.628 billones que produjeron una entrada neta de $441.3 millones, y el promedio gastado por turista fue de $421 durante el mismo año. 9 Una baja del uno por ciento en el número de turistas que nos visitan, usando el año 1993 como ejemplo, equivale a una pérdida de $16.3 millones anuales (3,869,000 x 0.01 x $421 = $16,296,910). De acuerdo con el informe económico al gobernador de 1995 de la Junta de Planificación: “el turismo repercute en otros sectores y actividades económicas tales como el comercio al detal, la transportación y la recreación. Se estima que en el 1994-95 los gastos de visitantes generaron directa e indirectamente $1,261.1 millones al producto bruto y $1,420.4 millones al producto bruto interno. Además, se generaron 55 mil empleos directos e indirectos por concepto de estos gastos”. Por lo tanto, podemos fácilmente ver la vital importancia en el área de servicio turístico y cómo éste nos afecta económicamente el colectivo y a nivel individual. El buen trato a este turista, mantener precios competitivos, mantener un país limpio de basura, sin olores ofensivos para éstos y otros visitantes extranjeros son sumamente vitales a nuestra economía. La importancia en el área de servicios y cómo ésta afecta y nos vemos afectados con la productividad como colectivo. Lo imperativo de cuidar nuestra apariencia y nuestro ambiente, ya que cada basurita que se tira en los alrededores cuesta mucho dinero debido a su efecto multiplicativo y reacción en cadena hacia otros sectores de la economía. Debe ser nuestro orgullo como individuo; después de todo, nosotros limpiamos nuestros hogares antes de llevar la visita para que éstos se sientan bien y se lleven una buena impresión. Los valores, costumbres morales y su influencia en el colectivo tienen una relación con los hábitos y costumbres que enseñamos y practicamos a diario. Lo que hacemos en nuestro tiempo libre es asunto nuestro, pero recordemos que no podemos mejorar mientras la responsabilidad se pase al vecino, al gobierno o al político. Lo que pasa en nuestra sociedad comienza con el individuo.
