LA CAPUCINE TUBÉREUSE LA, CAPUCINE TUBÉREUSE. 269 CHAPITRE XI (TROPŒOLUM TUBEROSUM, Ruiz.) Plante dicotylédone de la famille des Tropœolées. La capucine tubéreuse est originaire du Pérou ; elle a été signalée en 1794 dans la Flora peruviana etchilensis, pi. 314, t. III de Ruitz et Pavon et importée pour la première fois en Europe, en 1836, par Mathews. Les Mexicains la nomment ysanô ou taiacha; les Boliviens, ysano; les Péruviens, mayna. Cette plante grimpante est cultivée dans l'Amérique méridionale pour les renflements tuberculeux qu'on observe sur ces racines fibreuses et qui servent d'aliment aux populations qui habitent les Andes de Popayan, de Surace, villages Tubercu^drêapucine. situés à 2 500 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer. Les Américains tirent aussi un excellent parti de ses tubercules féculents, que les Péruviens appellent massuas. Ces tubercules ovoïdes ou pyriformes (fig. 39) ont une peau fine ; ils sont jaunes avec des
