•L'ARBRE A PAIN OU JACQUIER. CHAPITRE V l/ARBRE A PAIX OU JACQUIER (AllTOCAIlI'CS.) Plante dicotylèdone de la famille des Artocarpées. L'arbre à pain ou Jacquier est répandu dans les parties intertropicales de l'Asie et de l'Océanie. Il croît à l'état sauvage dans la partie orientale de l'archipel Indien. On le trouve aussi dans l'Amérique équinoxiale, mais le climat de l'Asie centrale n'est pas assez chaud pour qu'il puisse y mûrir ses fruits qui sont très alimentaires. Cet arbre est aussi très utile dans l'Inde méridionale, la Malaisie, la Microuésie, aux îles Hawaï, à Taïti, à la Réunion, à la Martinique, à la Nouvelle-Calédonie, dans l'île de Ceylan, à Sumatra, à Guatemala, aux Moluques, aux Nouvelles-Hébrides, au Malabar, à l'île Maurice, à la Jamaïque, au Pérou, aux îles Yallis,dans l'Océanie équatoriale, aux îles Marquises, à la Guyane, etc. Il est souvent très remarquable. Le Jacquier constitue à la fois un arbre très utile et un arbre d'agrément. Son tronc est droit, de la grosseur d'un homme et haut de 8 à 12 mètres. Ses branches sont nombreuses et étalées. Ses feuilles sont grandes, ovales, acuminées, entières ou divisées en lobes. Ses fruits féculifères composés de carpelles aglomérés sur un réceptacle charnu, sont arrondis ou ovoïdes, de la grosseur de la tête d'un homme et d'un poids parfois considérable.
