308 PLANTES ALIMENTAIRES DES PAYS CHAUDS. après la maturité du régime. Un pied peut végéter pendant cinq à six années. Espèces et variétés* Le bananier ou figuier des Indes est herbacé et vivace, mais sa tige périt dès qu'elle a produit son régime. Le fruit de cette plante est appelé banane, figue banane, figue d'Adam. Dans la Mélanésie on le nomme ounis. A Madère, on l'appelle figue du paradis, parce qu'on croit que la banane est le fruit qui tenta Eve. Les principales espèces sont au nombre de cinq, savoir : l. Bananier commun ou bananier du paradis. (MCS A l'A 11 A DISK ' \, L.) Tige cylindrique, très forte, verte, de 4 à 5 mètres de hauteur; feuilles très belles, longues de l' n .50 à 2 mètres, ondulées, oblongues et d'un beau vert satiné; bractées rouge pourpre; couvert par une pou-sicre farineuse blanchâtre; fruit à trois ou cinq angles, cylindracè. un peu arqué à son extrémité, long de 0 m .10 à 0"V2f>, ne renfermant aucune graine. Cette espèce (fig. 48) appelée souvent bananier nain ou plantain, est originaire des Indes orientales. On l'appelle conquin-tug k la (\uyi\ne,pisang, dane la Malaisie, dominico à Cuba, omelu dans les îles Pelagiennes, olrbû ibroïn k la Guinée. En Europe, on la nomme souvent banane dominicaine. Elle est abondante au Cabon, à Natal et dans l'Afrique australe. Le bananier commun a produit 14 variétés au Malabar; 21» à Taïti ; 15, aux îles Tonga ; 16, à la Malaisie, et 8o à Batavia. Ses régimes pèsent de 20 à 25 kilog. A la Réunion il a donné naissance aux variétés appelées pain de Chine9 rouge de Barbarie, figue mignonne et Gengely, races qui sont très cultivées dans l'île.
