John Law påpekar om innovationer att ”they might have been otherwise: this
is the key to our interest and concern with technologies” (Bijker & Law,
1992:3). Detta är liknande tankar som den amerikanske pragmatikern William
James (1909/1996) uttryckte i början av seklet;

»What really exists is not things made but things in the making. Once made,
they are dead, and an infinite number of alternative conceptual decompositions
can be used to defining them. But put yourself in the making by a
stroke of intuitive sympathy with the thing and, the whole range of possible
decompositions coming into your possession, you are no longer troubled
with the question which of them is more absolutely true. Reality falls in
passing into conceptual analysis; it mounts in living its own undivided life –
it buds and bourgeons, changes, and creates.« (James, 1909/1996:263-
264)
Lämnar man denna insikt – att en process i varande har ett öppet slut – är
risken överhängande att resultaten hänförs till välplanerade rationella handlingar
som späder på uppfattningen om att entreprenörskap är logiskt, linjärt,
deterministiskt och därför mer eller mindre förutsägbart och kontrollerbart.
Karl Weick (2007) pekar på detta genom att citera historikern Greg Dening;
»We are comfortable in our view of the past. The past happened in a totally
particular way in space and time. That is its realism. All the possibilities of
what might have happened are reduced to one. The energies of historical
enquirers are focused on discovering what that one possibility was. But by
that we have not re-presented the past. To do that we have to enter into the
experience of those actors in the past who, like us, experience a present as
if all the possibilities are still there. If a historian’s ambition is to describe
how people actually experienced their lives, then that historian has to slough
off many certainties. To give back to the past its present, one has to be a little
humble about what one can know [Dening, 1996:xv-xvi].« (Weick,
2007:17)
Denna avhandlings metodval går mot en longitudinellt pågående och framåtblickande
snarare än en retrospektiv studie, beskrivande snarare än en rationellt
normativ, dramatistisk snarare än en deterministisk och vill på detta sätt
lyfta fram ett vardagsnära, spännande och lustfyllt entreprenöriellt drama
som ett alternativ till de historiskt återgivna, mytskapande berättelserna som
redan finns i överflöd.
Avgränsningar och förtydliganden
Även om litteraturkritikern Kenneth Burke (1965:49) poängterar att ”every
way of seeing is also a way of not seeing” och hur holistisk man som författare
än önskar att vara, kräver texter olika former av reduktioner och avgränsningar.
