Med denne dystre, men enkle historie afprøver Trier den ærkeamerikanske genre,<br />

musicalen, der som arketype på amerikansk filmtradition formentlig kun overgås<br />

af westerngenren. Ulig westerngenren er musicalen oprindeligt en hybrid, der<br />

baserer sig på den europæiske operette og den amerikanske vaudeville. 218 En<br />

hovedkilde til Hollywoods musicals er New Yorks Broadway, hvis opsætninger<br />

gennem tiden har leveret materiale til utallige filmmusicals, hvor de ekstravagante<br />

sang- og dansenumre samt en overdådig scenografi var målet, mens den enkle og<br />

ofte banale historie primært fungerede som dét, der bandt numrene sammen.<br />

Sang- og dansenumrene besad dog en langt større grad af kompleksitet end<br />

filmens handling, hvor nogle af de største navne fra Broadway – sangskrivere og<br />

komponister – blev hentet ind af Hollywood: Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Ira and<br />

George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Rodgers and Hart og senere Oscar<br />

Hammerstein. 219 De store navne har altid været en væsentlig ingrediens i<br />

musicalgenren, der har været tæt forbundet med stjernesystemet:<br />

The status of factors as icons, embodying a set of particular values, attitudes, and actions, is<br />

important to any cinematic formula. But Bogart’s detective, Cagney’s and Robinson’s<br />

gangsters, Grant and Hepburn’s screwball couple, and even Wayne’s heroic Westerner<br />

could not assume the intrinsic significance of the musical’s star performers, particularly<br />

Astaire, Rogers, Gene Kelly, and Judy Garland, each of whom could both dance and sing.<br />

The principal reason for the enhanced significance of their personalities has to do, of<br />

course, with the range of dramatic and performance demands that are placed upon the<br />

musical star. Just as the genre operates by means of a balance between story and music and<br />

between reality and illusion, so must its central characters balance and interrelate their<br />

dramatic personalities with their talents as musical performers. 220<br />
