SUMMaRY<br />

The core of the early education development unit project, VKK-Metro, was<br />

formed by 21 research day-care centres. Each of them selected a development<br />

area that suited their needs but was connected to the common theme. This<br />

publication is an account of the day-care centres’ development activities<br />

in 2008 and 2009.<br />

The progress of the development process was observed each month<br />

via electronic surveys created by VKK-Metro. The collected data was<br />

immediately sent back to the respective day-care centres to support<br />

discussions and considerations within the units. The publication describes<br />

the processes of the day-care centres as a whole.<br />

The day-care centre environment places its own unique set of challenges<br />

on developmental efforts. These challenges must be taken into consideration<br />

in order to reach a satisfactory result. The difficulty of finding time for<br />

shared conversations, the hectic nature of the work and the relatively rapid<br />

staff turnover have all affected the development work. Under these kinds<br />

of circumstances, one of the most important principles is to divide the<br />

development process into small steps.<br />

The importance of the instructor who was appointed to aid the daycare<br />

centre’s director and support the development efforts was found to be<br />

considerable. Similarly, the contact persons in the day-care centres played a<br />

significant role. Students also emerged as a, for the present, largely untapped<br />

resource for development. The various pilot projects and activities involving<br />

students received ample praise from the workers in the field.<br />

The end of the publication summarises the ten guiding principles of<br />

the VKK-Metro unit, which took form during the development process.<br />
