Institutions of Education and Musical Transference of Turkish Music in Ottoman Era
The old music generated by Turks before Islamic period was composed of early heroes’ legends and national
epics that were being song with kopuz. Although there were some efforts to improve different notation systems, to explain
musical notes and to repeat them, these kinds of notation systems never got wide in musical education and in recording of
repertoire. Accordingly with the conditions of nomadic society, as a practical method, meşk were implemented for teaching
the music and for transferring of repertoire to the next generation and it has sustained its existence starting before Islamic
period to the ends of 19 th century.
Lyrics and instrumental repertoire of the education of playing instrument singing were protected through the
meşk process as a teaching and transferring method between teacher and student. By this method, it is also provided the
transference of musical heritage from a generation to the next. Teaching of Turkish music was continued mainly based on
this method until the first quarter of the 19 th century. Afterwards, it partly existed in some institutions like conservatories
established under the effect of Westernization movement. The notation in the traditional approach that used meşk method
as a tool of education and transference only took a place in edvar books to emphasize on the theoric explanations. Learning
about the institutions and their method of music education have a big importance for researchers to notice the main characteristic
of Turkish music.
In this presentation, implementation of meşk method in music education of Ottoman era, its types, prequalification
of the students being accepted to the meşk, its periods, characteristics of the teachers, useful and unfavorable aspects
of this will be put forth. Ottoman institutions of musical education and their methods also will be mentioned.
