Economic Geography of Asia Minor in the Beginning of the 20 th Century according to the Greek
Bibliography of the Period: Animal Husbandry
During the first decades of the 20 th century in Asia Minor (defined as the west part of the Euphrates river region
of the Asiatic part of modern Turkey) Greek populations inhabited. The existence of Greek people caused the interest of
the Greek scientists for the geographical knowledge of Asia Minor space, resulting in the writing and publishing of issues
which give information on the geography of the area.
From these issues we collect information concerning elements (mainly qualitative) of the economic geography
of Asia Minor for the first two decades of the 20th century. In this paper we focus on a part of primary production: animal
husbandry, which is mainly extensive free-range farming.
The research data from the Greek bibliography are classified by geographical administrative region (vilayet etc.)
of the era and, after processing, are attributed to maps. Thus, a series of thematic maps are designed, providing information
on livestock, sorted into categories. The maps illustrate, for each of the geographical - administrative regions, the existence
of large production quantities or high quality of livestock and products in specific parts of the map.
Subsequently, geographical development zones of the livestock production are defined and, also, spatial differentiation
based on variables of economic geography.
The resulting data are compared with the corresponding ones of the recent period of the same areas of Turkish
territory, to determine the differences observed in the economic geography of the region, in terms of the quantitative
changes in the spatial differentiation.
