Sole-Shipowning, Shipowning Partnerships and Merchants
It is known that the European states have been disposed to spread their commercial activities towards the Mediterranean
and East especially from the mid-15 th century. When examining the spreading efforts of European states, commercial
activities toward the East through the efforts of England, trade with British origin ships to the Mediterranean and
the Eastern in the years of 1580-1650 was remarkable. By the reason of differences in methods and institutions in business
operating of ‘merchant marines’ based on capital-oriented in the aforementioned years, it is necessary to examine within
the two different period. The first period can be defined as a ‘sole-shipowning’ for the years of 1580-1620 because of the
prevalence of the detached ship ownership in this term. The other period is related to the ‘joint-stock company’ institution
or the methods of doing business due to ownership of marine ship occured more than one partner in this period.
In this paper, analyzed with a comparative method, the notable business history institutions, the business operating
and implementation of merchant marine- shipping trade with economic, commercial and military elements of changing
in the mentioned two separate periods in years of 1580-1650. For the first period, the business operations of three major
merchants, representatives of the Levant Company, will be traced by way of information of combination of commodities,
burden-tonnage, division of labor structure and other general processes in accordance with the records from British Library
and National Archive. Also, according to the Trinity Marine Copurt records regarding the ship certificate in the years of
1626-1638, the level and general characteristics of ‘shipowning partnerships’ will be discussed.
