Electric Lightening and Tram Line Projects in the City of Baghdad as a case of Modernization of
Daily Life in Iraq
Industrial revolution, which had began in England by the innovation in woven industry in the 18 th century and
become the age of invention by spreading throughout Europe in 19 th century, had profoundly influenced the political history
of the world as also led to serious conversion on the daily lives of individuals. One of the areas where the industrial
revolution has been most influential and closely related to individuals was the transformation of the city. The developments
in iron and steel industry coupling with the age of invention had shortened distances, urban areas are integrated with each
other thanks to the modernization in transportation, and a new life away from the center of the city has emerged.
The effect of industrial revolution to the conversion of individuals and the city has committed a similar process
in the Ottoman Empire as in general. The beginnings of modernization in urban transport at the capital Istanbul and the
integration process of the various parts of the city with each other began to spread throughout the empire in time. In this
context, Baghdad, which could be considered as almost the eastern end of the Ottoman Empire, has been the scene of
modernization efforts in everyday life during the long 19 th century? This paper aims to elicit projects of construction of a
tram line and lightening of the city of Baghdad with electricity as means of modernizing everyday life, during the reign of
Abdulhamid II and Second Constitutional Era. In this regard, the causes of above-mentioned projects and the importance
of tram concessions and lighting project will be dealt.
