Araştırmamız, zorlu şartlara rağmen her yıl İngiltere’ye
tonlarca ham bakırın ihraç edildiğini göstermiştir. Bakır cevherleri develerle Ergani’den İskenderun’a taşınır, buradan da
Böylelikle on dokuzuncu yüzyıl Avrupa kapitalizminin Osmanlı ekonomisini nasıl etkilediği tartışmalarına
katkıda bulunmak amaçlanmaktadır.
Selling Minerals to Europe in the Global Age: Copper Ore Exportation from Ergani to England
(1866-1914)
Throughout the history, rich copper deposits of Ergani mines played an essential role in meeting the needs of
both the Ottoman state and the public. The copper extracted from these state-run mines began to be exported to Britain in
the second half of the nineteenth century and became a remarkable source of income. This study examines the journey of
copper ores from Ergani to England to be used as raw material and the relevant commercial relations with a perspective of
economic history. The research focuses mainly on the agencies in the copper trade, the state’s policies to increase the copper
extraction and maintain its exportation, the transportation of the copper and the marketing of the ores in Britain. The
sources used are the correspondences and copper export records from the Prime Ministry Ottoman archives dated between
1866 and 1914. These documents and records provided qualitative and quantitative data which will uncover the commercial
mechanism of copper and the economic conditions under which the exportation took place. The research shows that tons
of copper ores were exported to Britain despite the hard conditions. The ores were being conveyed from Ergani to Alexandrette
by camels and transported to the British ports by steamers. The Ottoman Bank was the leading institution that
mediated this business. Consequently, by discussing the exportation of copper minerals from the Ottoman Empire which
was a periphery country, to an industrialized center country, this study sheds light on the trade of a non-agricultural raw
material which has not been studied thoroughly. The aim is to contribute to the discussions on how the nineteenth century
European capitalism influenced the Ottoman economy.
