Algerian Women in the Ottoman Documents<br />

Introduction:<br />

The Centre of National Archives has several and various Ottoman documents which prove that Algeria had an<br />

accurate and well-organized administration. In that era, the State took care of recording all the data and cases submitted to<br />

its courts whether it had to do with the Religious Judge or Beyt El-Mal.<br />

1 – Documents of religious courts contracts and their importance:<br />

These documents were various and abundant which showed the multifunction role played by the judge at that<br />

time and this appeared through all the cases submitted to his council. These cases were numerous in the religious courts.<br />

2- Series of Beyt El-Mal registers:<br />

Beyt El-Mal registers are considered as a primary source to write the social and the economic history. They are<br />

issued by the institution of Beyt El-Mal. They comprehend an accurate registry and inventory of all the inheritances of<br />

deceased persons.<br />

3- Documents of the National library:<br />

These documents contain very important data on the Algerian history during the Ottoman period through the<br />

political relationship between Algeria and the Ottoman government; it concerns the laws of appointment of governors and<br />

the mobilization of Algerian in Anatolia notably the city of EZMIR. It also reflects the economical activity through ships<br />

and Algerian navy.<br />

4 - Turkish words:<br />

In this study, we have highlighted a pattern of the registers of the period 1800-18<strong>17</strong> as well as some marriage contracts<br />

that contained the effects of deceased persons. These acquisitions and the effects of the dowry were called by names<br />

of Ottoman origins with Turkish names.<br />
