I. Dünya Savaşı Öncesinde Osmanlı Toplumunda Nesturilerin Durumu
Nesturilerin I. Dünya Savaşı’nın başlamasının ardından
Osmanlı’ya resmen savaş ilan ederek İtilaf Devletleri’nin en küçük müttefiki olmalarının nedenlerinin anlaşılabilmesi açısından
savaş öncesindeki durumlarının izahı oldukça önem arz etmektedir. Bu çerçevede Osmanlı, Amerikan ve İngiliz
arşiv belgeleri, bölgede yaşamış bazı misyoner ve yabancıların hatıratları ve birçok ikinci el kaynak kullanılmıştır.
The Position of Nestorians in Ottoman Empire before World War I
As one of the most ancient Christian societies of the Middle East, Nestorians mostly lived in the eastern and
southeastern Anatolia regions of the Ottoman lands which were on the borders of Iran. Nestorians who lived as semi-independent
tribes were bound, both religiously and administratively, to the Nestorian Patriarch known as Mar Shimon. Nestorian
Church, on the other hand, administratively tied to Armenian Church and was maintaining their communication with
the Ottoman State through this church.
Under the Ottoman administration, they did not experience any significant problem with the state authorities
until the second half of the 19 th century when the missionary activities intensified in the region. While these activities were
providing the Nestorians with better educational and financial benefits, they caused them to deteriorate their relationships
with their neighbor societies and with the state.
In this study, Nestorians before the World War I are documented with respect to their populations, settlements
and relationships with other societies and also England and Russia from a strategic perspective. It is extremely crucial to
explain the status and situations of Nestorians before the War to better understand why they declared war to the Ottomans
and became the smallest confederate of the Allies after the World War I started. For this purpose, multiple sources
including Ottoman, American and British archives, diaries of missioners and foreign observers along with many secondary
sources were utilized.
