Osmanlı Topraklarında “Sahte” Bir Hekim: İspanyol Pedro’nun İzlenimleriyle Osmanlı Tıbbı
(1552-1556)
Osmanlı dönemi sağlık hayatıyla ilgili bilgi veren kaynaklar arasında seyahatnameler önemli bir yer tutar. Bunlardan
A False Physician in Ottoman Lands: Ottoman Medicine by the Impressions of Spanish Pedro
(1552 – 1556)
Among the resources that give knowledge about the Ottoman Period medical life, for several reasons, travel
books have an important place. One of these is the travel book, although written in 1557, detained as manuscripts for almost
three hundred years, and scarcely published in 1905 by Manuel Serrano y Sanz by the name Viaje de Turquia. As put forward
some different opinions on who might be the author, there are arguments about whether this person indeed lived in the
Ottoman lands and if he was actually a physician. In the preface, the author states his purpose as to introduce the Ottoman
that was the worst enemy of Spanish King Philip II.
Different from the other travel books, the work was based on the dialogue between three friends. Being captured
by the Turks, Spanish Pedro de Urdemalas pretends to be a “physician” in order to save himself. After his release, he recounts
his experiences to his friends Juan de Voto a Dios and Matalas Callando. Pedro, who has been the captive of The
Chief Admiral Sinan Pasha (d. December 21, 1553) between 1552 and 1556, managed to escape after his death, writes about
his adventures; from the time of his capture to his escape in the first chapter, and in the second chapter, he portrays the
social, administrative and military structure of Ottoman society.
A further distinctive feature of the work is that Pedro’s recollections are substantially based upon sickness and
health in consequence of him being a “physician”, which displays some interesting views on the health in 16 th century
Istanbul: Turks’ approach to diseases and some treatment methods; methods for diagnosis and treatment; education of
physicians; differences between a surgeon and a physician; selection of court physicians; their nationalities, characteristics,
attires; treatment of women and many other subjects were depicted in a very realistic and detailed way.
