Arab Intellectuals under the Young Turks: A Comparative Historical Analysis on Salim Ali
Salam’s Memoirs
Aiming to materialize the sense of Ottoman citizenship, reformers in the Tanzimat period advocated the idea of
Ottomanism to maintain the integrity of the empire. However, nationalist movements seriously damaged the notion of Ottomanism
throughout the 19th century. Development of Arab nationalism, though prematurely, coincided with the Second
Constitutional Period. It is possible to observe the emergence of different forms of Arab nationalism in the discourses of
Arab intellectuals who lived in this period. This research attempts to explain the transformation of the attitudes of Salim Ali
Salam, an influential Arab intellectual from Beirut, toward Ottoman rule under the Young Turks. I analyze the memoirs of
Salim Ali Salam by adopting comparative-historical method, in addition to Foucaultian discourse analysis, via the concepts
of ‘threshold,’ ‘historical emergence,’ and ‘analysis of decent.’
