XIX. Yüzyıl Türk Şiirinde Ben’in Görünümleri
The Appearances of the “Self” in 19 th Century Turkish Poetry
The modernization in many ways the world is dominated by the 19th century with many conceptual changes, process
can also be characterized by reflection on the concept art of the individual, self and subject. The subject’s appearance
in the text with romanticism in Western art and literature constitute one paradigm of the new era. In contemporary Turkish
literature, one of the most significant gestures of “modernity” is assumed to be individual reflection in the literary work.
Yet the literati of classical Ottoman-Turkish poetry, working through the material almost entirely at hand, expressed themselves
by means of an idiom of a more refined expression of the truth, not by an assertion of the individual “tastes”. Still the
modern Turkish poetry, with the rapid social change in Turkey, has become a space of the imaginary “self-encounters” and
“self-reflections”. That is why modern poetry became the universe of expressing the individual disquiet. The poetic subject,
even while speaking to the community directly, in fact addresses itself in order to come to terms with a self-insight, self-recognition,
and self-definition. We argue that, under the influence of the Romantic Movement, modern Turkish poetry seeks
to find the origins of the sublime in the human being and the nature, and thus invents a new poetical subject in accordance
with the modern needs of the observation of the pure nature, the self in the nature, and the nature in the self. The fact that
the emergence of this poetical subject has lead to the formation of a dominant discourse in the 19th century Turkish poetry
that sometimes has become irritable should also be noted.
