18. Yüzyıl Osmanlı-İngiliz Ticareti: Kaynaklar ve Kaynak Kullanımı
18. yüzyılda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ile İngiltere arasında yapılan ticaret, iki ülkenin gümrük kayıtlarına yansımış
haldedir ve iki bölge arasındaki ticareti yüzyılı boyunca söz konusu kayıtlardan takip edebilmek mümkündür. İngiliz
gümrük kayıtlarına bakıldığında, verilerin daha sistematik ve daha istikrarlı olduğu; buna bağlı olarak ticaret hacminin,
mal çeşitlerinin ve ticarette uzun vadeli trendlerin ve ortaya çıkan değişikliklerin takip edilmesi daha kolay gözükmektedir.
Osmanlı gümrükleri söz konusu olduğunda ise, verilerin belirli dönem ve bölgelere sıkışmış olduğu görülmektedir ve buna
bağlı olarak da ikili ticaretin hacmi ve uzun vadeli trendlerle ilgili tahminlerde bulunmak zordur. Ancak buna rağmen iki
bölge arasındaki ithalat ve ihracata sahne olan malların yapısı; en azından belirli dönem ve bölgeler itibarıyla, Osmanlı
gümrük kayıtlarıyla da ortaya konabilecek durumdadır. Üstelik, bu kayıtlardan ortaya çıkan tablonun, aynı dönemdeki
İngiliz gümrük kayıtlarının sonuçlarıyla da örtüştüğü görülmüştür. Bu örtüşme, iki farklı veri kaynağının güvenilirliği ile
ilgili de fikir vericidir.
18 th Century Anglo-Ottoman Trade: Sources and Source Use
The trade conducted between the Ottoman Empire and England in the 18th century is reflected in the customs
registers of both countries and these registers allow us to track the trade between them throughout the century. As regards
the English customs registers, they seem to have been quite systematically and regularly recorded, a peculiarity that eases
the description of the composition of trade articles and the volume of trade and tracking the long-term trends and the
changes taking place in in the course of time. As for the Ottoman customs registers, on the other hand, they seem to have
been limited to certain periods and regions, which makes assessments on the volume and long term-trend of the bilateral
trade difficult. Still however, the nature of the goods exchanged between the two regions, at least for certain periods and
regions can be displayed. Furthermore, the composition put forth by these registers overlaps with the results of the English
customs registers of the same period. This coincidence, in fact, gives a clue on the authenticity of the two different sources
