• Centre for Economic Learning and Social Evolution (ELSE)<br />

The Centre is dedicated to increasing <strong>und</strong>erstanding about how individuals learn<br />

about the way in which to utilise and distribute their resources.<br />

The Centre’s work addresses several key themes which impact on the UK’s<br />

economic performance. These include the impact of both the internal structure and<br />

organisation of firms and the external market environment on output, productivity<br />

and technical change.<br />

• Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE)<br />

Over the past 20 years Africa has been the world’s worst performing economic<br />

region; as a result, it now has the world’s highest incidence of poverty. The<br />

Centre’s <strong>und</strong>erlying<br />

objective is to make a significant contribution to the transformation of this<br />

• Cities: Competitiveness and Cohesion<br />

To improve <strong>und</strong>erstanding of how cities develop and mobilise distinctive<br />

economic assets to secure competitive advantage, and how these processes impact<br />

upon and are influenced by social cohesion and environmental quality.<br />

Duration of programme: August 1996 – June 2002<br />

Total grant: £3,500,000 (including £300,000 from the DETR); 23 projects<br />
