Our evaluation of these results and our corresponding recommendations for corrosion control for reinforced concrete in contact with these soils and buried site utilities are presented herein for your consideration. Soil Chemical Analysis SOIL TESTING & ANALYSIS One (1) soil sample from the project site was chemically analyzed for corrosivity by your laboratory. The sample was analyzed for chloride and sulfate concentration, pH, saturated resistivity REDOX potential and moisture percentage in accordance with Caltrans Standards. The test results are presented in Cooper Testing Laboratories Corrosivity Test Summary dated 5/30/2008. Site Corrosivity Evaluation TS Fedex Security Building Project No. 94240/1 Reinforced Concrete JDH Corrosion Consultants, Inc. 2 DISCUSSION Due to moderately high levels of water-soluble sulfates found in these soils, a good quality dense concrete should be used for the concrete slabs at this location. Type II concrete mix with a maximum water-to-cement ratio of 0.50 should be utilized at this site. Adhering to the minimum depth of cover for the reinforcing steel in the foundations as specified in the Uniform Building Code is recommended for the subject structures. Underground Metallic Pipelines The soils at the project site are considered to be “moderately corrosive” to ductile/cast iron, steel and dielectric coated steel based on the resistivity measurements. Therefore, corrosion control in the form of coatings and cathodic protection is warranted for all buried metallic pressure pipelines, such as domestic and fire water pipelines, planned for use at this site depending upon the critical nature of the structures. All underground pipelines should also be electrically isolated from above grade structures, reinforced concrete structures and copper lines in order to avoid potential galvanic corrosion problems. The extremely low value of REDOX potential indicates anaerobic conditions, suitable for sulfate reducing bacteria and is considered to be corrosive to ductile/cast iron, steel and dielectric coated steel.
