EARLY LEARNING EXPERIENCES<br />

“It seems that all of my life I have expressed [the Teamwork]<br />

competencies. I was president of my class in high school, and these<br />

leadership qualities have <strong>always</strong> seemed to be natural for me.<br />

“Demonstrating these competencies has never been a conscious<br />

effort on my part. I can’t ever remember a time in my life when I<br />

did not use them. Perhaps my perspective comes from the fact that<br />

I was one of six children growing up. (I was the fi fth born out of<br />

the six children.) My father died when I was three years old and my<br />

mother raised all six of us by herself. We had to work together as a<br />

unit, and lack of teamwork was just not an option. We all learned<br />

that our strength and security lay in our numbers. It was ‘us’ trying<br />

to survive and we had to stick together to do it. That was my mom’s<br />

message.”<br />

1. START THE DAY WITH “AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE”<br />

“As I drive to work each day, I mentally walk through a list of<br />

things that I am grateful for (e.g., my family, health, and job). I also<br />

specifically think of individuals on the team who I am particularly<br />

grateful for. By the time I have gone through this exercise, I am<br />

ready to start the day feeling uplifted.”<br />

2. FOCUSED GREETING OF PEOPLE<br />

“I believe it is important to greet people in such a manner as<br />

to indicate that you are glad to see them and that you view this<br />

individual as an important person. A strong handshake, direct eye<br />

contact, and a display of genuine interest in the person conveys the
