ARE YOU A STAR PERFORMER OR JUST AVERAGE? 27<br />

The determination of what competencies these leaders excel in<br />

is from a variety of sources written about them in the public domain.<br />

The depictions are inferred rather than established from interviews<br />

or assessments. The aim is to illustrate, inform, and match which<br />

behaviors to focus on to be a star in your organization.<br />

Everyone has different opinions of public figures, and you may<br />

disagree <strong>with</strong> how these leaders are profiled on the EI competencies.<br />

The goal is to look at them through the lenses of <strong>Emotional</strong><br />

and Social <strong>Intelligence</strong> competencies and assess which behaviors<br />

are effective and which aren’t, irrespective of your political persuasion,<br />

your ideology, or opinion of the leaders. Behavior is <strong>always</strong><br />

interpretive, and <strong>with</strong> high-profile leaders we have an opportunity<br />

to know more about their behaviors and patterns than we do <strong>with</strong><br />

other leaders, even though these portrayals are highly influenced by<br />

the media. My hope is that the specific behaviors of Stars that are<br />

salient in these profi les will serve as a view of <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong><br />

in action and be useful to you and others in developing leaders.<br />

In reading these profi les and the profi les of other successful<br />

leaders in this book, you will see their ability to be resilient after a<br />

failure or a derailer. These became turning points for their resurrection<br />

and return to Starhood. Pay attention to which parts of their<br />

stories impress or attract you, as that will be a sign that there is<br />

information for you and your development in that story.<br />

HOW STAR PERFORMERS SHINE<br />

The charts for each profi le illustrate and clarify the components<br />

of Star Performers. Notice how Stars are able to demonstrate the<br />

personal and social competencies in each of the boxes. True Stars<br />

know and manage themselves and understand and motivate others.<br />

Goleman has stated that one needs to focus on the personal side of<br />

emotional competencies fi rst in order to successfully enhance the<br />
