<strong>On</strong>e key in building a real relationship is to support the women<br />

as they deal <strong>with</strong> their “inner battles,” an issue that affects their<br />

performance and life in general. Some of these battles include<br />

lack of confidence, parental pressure, or the boyfriend back home.<br />

French works <strong>with</strong> the women to solve these confl icts so that they<br />

feel cared for and can then focus more intently on their performance<br />

on the court.<br />

BUSINESS APPLICATION<br />

• How are your relationships <strong>with</strong> your co-workers?<br />

• Do you know your direct reports very well?<br />

• Do you have an open and honest relationship <strong>with</strong> each one?<br />

• Do you know what is causing your direct reports’ performance<br />

to be less than desirable?<br />

• Do your direct reports trust you to share their real concerns?<br />

• Do your direct reports feel you care about them and that<br />

their opinion counts?<br />

6. SELF-ASSESSMENTS AND GOAL SETTING<br />

Coach French uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong<br />

Campbell Interest Test <strong>with</strong> all the players. They share their results<br />

to determine what they need to work on as individuals and also as a<br />

team. Each player is encouraged to acknowledge that she needs help<br />

in specific areas. “Athletes don’t learn this naturally,” French states.<br />

Some of the goals may be developing “trustworthiness, selflessness,<br />

patience, tolerance, or leadership.” The players are then encouraged<br />

to reach out to each other to provide support in these key areas.<br />
