Effective People. He also has his players attend diversity training<br />

so that they can appreciate the differences in their teammates as<br />

well as in other people who will show up in the rest of their lives.<br />

A highlight of the year was the afternoon spent <strong>with</strong> the late,<br />

legendary Coach John Wooden of UCLA. Coach Wooden and the<br />

players exchanged questions and he read poetry to them. Wooden<br />

discussed his Pyramid of Success, which has 15 building blocks,<br />

many identical to the EI competencies, such as confidence, team<br />

spirit, self-control, initiative, industriousness, conscientiousness,<br />

cooperation, and loyalty.<br />

Wooden’s principles are evident in all of his actions. During one<br />

of the meetings, he received two phone calls. <strong>On</strong>e was from Roone<br />

Arledge, the creator of ABC Monday Night Sports as well as the ABC<br />

news division. Coach Wooden let the call go directly into voicemail<br />

because he didn’t want to interrupt his visit <strong>with</strong> the players. The<br />

second call was from his granddaughter. He jumped up to answer<br />

that one!<br />
