LACK OF SELF-CONTROL AND THE INABILITY<br />

TO DELAY GRATIFICATION<br />

It is apparent that lack of impulse control or self-control is a<br />

common theme for leaders who have derailed. This weakness is contradictory<br />

to our need for someone who is consistent, steady, and<br />

grounded. If a leader lacks self-control, he or she becomes unpredictable<br />

and untrustworthy. No one knows when or to what the<br />

leader may react. In primitive terms, this kind of person becomes<br />

unsafe and even dangerous to others and the organization. Today<br />

it is more and more apparent how blind spots in the personal competencies<br />

of executives’ <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> have led to the greed,<br />

lying, and manipulations inside major corporations such as Enron,<br />

Adelphia, and WorldCom, to name a few. “It feels like almost every
