social relationships, and we are “wired to connect.” 8<br />

The term Social <strong>Intelligence</strong> was fi rst coined by Edward<br />

Thorndike in 1920 and defi ned as the ability to understand and<br />

manage men and women. Reuven Bar-<strong>On</strong>, a psychologist and one of<br />

the founding fathers of <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong>, has used the term<br />

<strong>Emotional</strong> and Social <strong>Intelligence</strong> from his start. Goleman, in his<br />

book Social <strong>Intelligence</strong>, expanded the working defi nitions to call<br />

the personal side of the equation <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> and the<br />

social side Social <strong>Intelligence</strong>.<br />

For the purpose of this book, I will use the generic term <strong>Emotional</strong><br />

<strong>Intelligence</strong> to incorporate the advances of Social <strong>Intelligence</strong>,<br />

brain neurosciences, and the new field of NeuroLeadership.<br />

The <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> defi nition I will use is the two-bytwo<br />

model shown in the following chart from the Goleman, Boyatzis<br />

and Hay Group model. EI can be defi ned in terms of understanding<br />

<strong>yours</strong>elf, managing <strong>yours</strong>elf, understanding others, and managing<br />

others. People who possess high <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong> are the<br />

ones who truly succeed in work—building flourishing careers and<br />

long-lasting relationships as well as having a balanced work and<br />

home life.<br />

The corporate world became enamored <strong>with</strong> EI, which led to<br />

Goleman’s writing of a second book, Working <strong>with</strong> <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong><br />

in 1998, and then, in 2006, Social <strong>Intelligence</strong>. As EI research<br />

and theory grew in popularity and impact, Goleman helped found the<br />

creation of the Consortium for Research on <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong><br />

in Organizations <strong>with</strong> Cary Cherniss; Richard Boyatzis, from Case
