the type of feedback Coach Wooden gave in his winning history.<br />

Wooden’s feedback to his players was 80% positive; while the average<br />

coach’s feedback is 80% negative and only 20% positive.<br />

Coach French thought he and his staff were pretty positive,<br />

but then he checked videotapes of the practices and scored it for<br />

positive and negative feedback. He was surprised to fi nd out that<br />

60% was negative! French immediately made changes and the next<br />

season he got it up to 50% positive, <strong>with</strong> the goal for the next year<br />

being to increase it to 60%.<br />

In the business world, it is very rare for teams to examine their<br />

performance to decide what works and what they can do differently,<br />

let alone watch themselves on videotape.<br />

BUSINESS APPLICATION<br />

• How often are you giving positive feedback to co-workers<br />

and direct reports?<br />

• Is the feedback immediate and helpful?<br />

• Is your feedback successfully received?<br />

• How often does your team as a whole evaluate your<br />

performance?<br />

10. FOCUS ON STRENGTHS<br />

Coach French makes sure that he shows fi lm clips of the team<br />

doing their offense and defense correctly. He knows that, from a<br />

motivational standpoint, he will get more effort from them if they<br />

focus on what they are doing right.<br />

An athlete’s confidence is critical to his or her performance, and<br />

focusing on strengths while balancing negative feedback ensures a<br />

confident performer. In the business world, your performer’s confidence<br />

level is also critical, although many managers don’t take this
