If you are not doing these micro-initiatives, these examples<br />

can help get you started. Add actions that will move you closer<br />

to your goals. As you can see, none of these actions are especially<br />

demanding or challenging. When done as a part of an overall leadership<br />

strategy, these micro-initiatives add<br />

up to a winning difference. Stars make a<br />

For many leaders a few actions will be<br />

the “degree of difference” that transforms<br />

them into Stars. I like to tell leaders that<br />

they are more than likely 85% there already.<br />

We are looking for these few actions that<br />

will push them into the 90 th and above<br />

percentile. Knowing these small but crucial moves are a mere 5-7%<br />

change of habit that will put them in the top 10% makes the process<br />

seem easier and builds motivation to act and incorporate these microinitiatives<br />

into their lives.<br />

As you assess your <strong>Emotional</strong> <strong>Intelligence</strong>, determine what microinitiatives<br />

you can implement to help move you into the top 10%.<br />

Choose one or two actions from the Star Profile and Coach’s Corner<br />

to incorporate and leap from average to Star Performance.<br />

COACH’S CORNER ON ASSESSMENTS<br />

This is an opportunity to rate <strong>yours</strong>elf on the key characteristics<br />

of being a Star and also to see if there is any evidence of<br />

derailers. We all want to know how we measure up on key aspects<br />

of success, but you may be apprehensive about assessing <strong>yours</strong>elf.<br />

Benjamin Franklin said, “There are three things extremely hard:<br />

steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.” A few tips on taking these<br />

assessments:
