Na een beschrijving van het inwendige van de tempel, deelt Wichmann mee
dat begonnen werd met een fluitduet. „Bei dem Vortrage stellen sich stets 2
Leute gegeneinander auf und bewegen sich während das Blasens, sodass einer
rückwarts schreitet. Dabei wird das Spiel ab und zu durch ein Getrampel im
Takte seitens der Korano begleitet, das aber keineswegs als Beifallsbezeugung
aufzufasscn ist. Zur Abwechslung ergreift der jüngsten einer Hände
voll Asche und wirft diese durch das Lichtloch, worauf ein zweiter einen
Riesenwischer nimmt und mit diesem hin- und herfährt bis der Staub verschwunden
ist. Diese Zeremonie hatte gewiss eine symbolische Bedeutung, die
zu erfahren uns aber nicht beschieden war. Nach diesen Darbietungen folgte
eine Art Tanz, der eigentlich nur in einem Marschiren in 2 Reihen, in Begleitung
von Gesang, bestand. Auf ein vom Korano gegebenes Zeichen stürmten
darauf alle jüngercn Leute aus dem Karawari und kehrten mit den auf der
Plattform aufgestellten, mit Sago gefüllten Körben zurück. Diesem
Akte folgte dann wieder Gesang unter Trommelbegleitung. Die weitere
Teilnahme an dem noch bis tief in die Nacht hinein währenden Feste
schenkten wir uns, denn es kam bei den Veranstaltungen doch nur auf eine
eintönige Wiederholung des bereits Gebotenen hinaus. Die noch zu erwartenden
materiellen Genüsse konnten uns in keiner Weise reizen. Sie bestanden in
dem noch zuzubereitenden, aus Schweinefleisch und Sagobrei bestehenden Mahl,
das im Tempel selbst hergerichtet wurde".

„Of the proceedings at a service inside the temple of Tobádi, witnessed on
the 21st of March 1903, I can report as follows. It was afternoon, and, whilst
the sound of the flutes in the temple was already heard, the older men were
sitting outside the fence, apparently indifferent to the feast, chewing their siri.
Novices of the temple were sitting behind the fence, colouring each other's hair
with red clay, and pulling it up into a very regular mop. Proceeding into the
temple, to the left a number of young men were seen, who were busy dividing
the meat of a pig, whilst round the centre pole a couple of men were walking
round, , playing the longest kind of flutes. This was repeated a few
times, and in between all present stamped on the floor now and then without
walking round, with somewhat bent knees, standing still on the same spot and
keeping time in an ever increasing tempo, ending each time with two loud
stamps. After this the act with the ceremonial staves took place and after this
again the walk round with flute music, but now only by the older people
without the novices. These older people were, however, very numerous, composing
a compact crowd of men, and walked round inside a circle of 4—5 rn.
in diameter. Then another stamp dance with flute accompaniment was executed
by two rows of eight men placed opposite each other, after which most of them
took up a position near the door opening, and hardly had a signal on two
flutes been given (on another occasion this turned out to consist of 24 double
notes), when some ten men, standing ready, rushed out of the temple, took on
their shoulders the baskets of sago placed in readiness on the platform, and,
hopping and dancing all the time, carried them inside the temple. The baskets
