The Southern Cross and the Great Bear are named after this figure — culture<br />
hero, bringer of beads, sago and prahu. And he apparently appears not only<br />
as a snake or fish but also as a bird (cf. Chai-mani in Chapter X, A), while<br />
the Great Bear is also called „Horn-bill".<br />
An analysis of the marriage system shows that four generations are necessary<br />
to maintain the ideal culture pattern of the tribe, to renew the society, as<br />
it were. The dualism of land (innerbay) phratry and sea (outer-bay) phratry<br />
is further broken up into land and sea groups within each of these phratries.<br />
It may even be possible to divide the quadripartite division thus formed into<br />
sixteen groups with an earlier double-unilateral system. The four-fold division<br />
is also found in the house design of the principal clan heads, in which a<br />
"public" central hall is flanked by two rooms on each side of it, built (at<br />
least in Tabati-darat) by different clans. It does not seem unlikely, then, that<br />
the following example of a classification schema in two columns, which serves<br />
as conclusion, actually should be in four columns, in accordance with the opposition<br />
sea phratry (sea-sea (north) and sea-land (east)) and land phratry<br />
(land-land (south) and land-sea (west)); however, the data are insufficient<br />
for this. The fact should once again be stressed that the things in the schema<br />
which belong together according to archaic standards represent the cosmos, but<br />
that nowadays there is little left of this „ideal" conception because contact<br />
with all kinds of foreign cultural influences has brought about an „Umwertung<br />
aller Werte".<br />
