19. ARCHIIiOCHIAN HEPTAMETER<br />

This species <strong>of</strong> verse consists <strong>of</strong> two members, the first a dac-<br />

tylic tetrameter a priore (vid. No. 2, in notis), <strong>and</strong> the latter ai<br />

trochaic dimeter brachycatalectic ; that is, the first portion <strong>of</strong><br />

the line contains four feet from the beginning <strong>of</strong> a dactylic hex-<br />

ameter, the fourth being always a dactyl, <strong>and</strong> the latter portion<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> three trochees ;<br />

21. DACTYLICO-IAMBIC.<br />

This measure occurs in the second, fourth, <strong>and</strong> other even<br />

lines <strong>of</strong> the eleventh Epode <strong>of</strong> <strong>Horace</strong>, omitted in the present<br />

edition. <strong>The</strong> first part <strong>of</strong> the verse is a dactylic trimeter cata-<br />

lectic (No. 3), the latter part is an iambic dimeter (No. 7) ;<br />

One peculiarity attendant on this metre will need explanation.<br />

In consequence <strong>of</strong> the union <strong>of</strong> two different kinds <strong>of</strong> verse into<br />

one line, a licence is allowed the poet <strong>with</strong> regard to the final<br />

syllable <strong>of</strong> tlie first verse, both in liengthening short syllables <strong>and</strong><br />

preseiTing vowels from elision.<br />

Hence lines thus composed <strong>of</strong> independent metres are called<br />

iavvapTriToi, or inconnexi on account <strong>of</strong> this medial license. Ar-<br />

chilochus, according to Hephaestion, was the first who employ-<br />

ed them. {Beniley, ad Epod. 11.) Many editions, however,<br />

prefer the simpler, though less correct, division into two dis-<br />

tinct measures ; as,<br />
