b) Studying Crops’ Biological Processes and Hybridization Exercises for Eggplant
Biological Processes of Eggplant:
5 Study plant morphology and growth stages (e.g., duration of and changes in morphological
structures at different growth stages).
5 Study flower morphology (e.g., type and parts of flower, duration of stigma receptivity and
anther dehiscence, pollination and emasculation procedures, etc.).
5 Study flower and fruit setting (e.g., number of flowers for pollination and fruits that set
after pollination).
5 Take note of all relevant observations and experiences during this activity.
Emasculation of Eggplant Flowers (Female Parent):
Note: Emasculation should be done in the afternoon between 3-5 p.m. prior to flower opening.
5 Choose flower buds that will open following morning.
5 Open/incise flower bud with a pair of forceps then remove 5 anthers.
5 Cover emasculated flower bud with a glassine bag.
5 Put a breeding tag with name of parent varieties, date of emasculation, and name of breeder.
5 Take note of all relevant observations and experiences during this activity.
Pollination of Emasculated Eggplant Flowers (Female Parent):
Note: Pollination should be done the following morning, between 7-10 a.m.
5 Inspect bags of emasculated female parent flowers and observe if they are still intact and
flowers have opened.
5 Collect freshly opened flowers in selected male parent variety, put in a plastic bag, and
write name of variety on bag. These flowers will serve as male parents.
5 Carefully remove glassine bag from emasculated female parent flower.
5 Cut petal of male parent flower and carefully rub pollen from the anther sac on stigma of
emasculated female parent flower.
5 Cover pollinated female parent flower again with glassine bag, add name of male variety
and date of pollination on breeding tag.
