air-tight mini-glass bottles can be used for long-term seed storage of different varieties and breeding
materials.
Farmers managing village genebanks should keep two types of record books: (a) store book, where
type and origin of seed stored is retained, such as name of variety or breeding lines, date of harvest,
quantity stored and taken out; and (b) source book, which contains information concerning history
and characteristics of variety or breeding lines which is important in creating a reference tool and
monitoring progress of breeding work.
In farmer field schools (FFSs), innovative experiences in maintaining village genebanks for farmers’
organically-grown vegetable varieties and breeding lines must be shared among farmers to further
improve their existing practices. The foregoing exercise was specifically designed to achieve this
purpose.
How long will this exercise take?
• At least thirty minutes for sharing of experiences;
• At least one hour for mini-workshop;
• At least one hour for participatory discussion using guide questions; and
• At least half day for field visit (optional).
