Direct and Indirect Observation<br />

You can observe a lot by just watch<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Interview<strong>in</strong>g is a great way to learn about attitudes and values. And it’s a<br />

great way to f<strong>in</strong>d out what people th<strong>in</strong>k they do. When you want to know<br />

what people actually do, however, there is no substitute for watch<strong>in</strong>g them or<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g the physical traces their behavior leaves beh<strong>in</strong>d. This chapter is about<br />

direct observation (watch<strong>in</strong>g people and record<strong>in</strong>g their behavior on the spot)<br />

and <strong>in</strong>direct observation (the archeology of human behavior).<br />

There are two big strategies for direct observation of behavior. You can be<br />

blatant about it and reactive, or you can be unobtrusive and nonreactive. In<br />

reactive observation, people know that you are watch<strong>in</strong>g them and may play<br />

to their audience—you. You can w<strong>in</strong>d up with data about what people want<br />

you to see and learn little about what people do when you’re not around. In<br />

unobtrusive observation, you study people’s behavior without their know<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it. This stops people from play<strong>in</strong>g to an audience, but it raises tough ethical<br />

questions. We’ll get to some of those problems later <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />

We beg<strong>in</strong> with the two most important methods for direct observation, cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g and spot sampl<strong>in</strong>g of behavior. Then we take up unobtrusive<br />

observation (and the ethical issues associated it), and, f<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>in</strong>direct<br />

observation (trace studies and archival research).<br />

CM—Cont<strong>in</strong>uous Monitor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

In cont<strong>in</strong>uous monitor<strong>in</strong>g, or CM, you watch a person, or group of people,<br />

and record their behavior as faithfully as possible. The technique was devel-<br />
