The data <strong>in</strong> table 19.7 are a random sample of the data <strong>in</strong> table 19.8. That<br />

table shows some social <strong>in</strong>dicators for 50 randomly selected countries around<br />

the world. We’ll be us<strong>in</strong>g the data <strong>in</strong> table 19.8 as we go along <strong>in</strong> the next few<br />

chapters.<br />

The Outlier Problem<br />

The mean is one of the all-time great statistics, but it has one very important<br />

drawback: In small samples, it’s heavily <strong>in</strong>fluenced by special cases, called
