higher the percentage of female illiteracy, the higher the total fertility rate<br />

across the sample of countries.<br />

Figure 20.1d is a plot of INFMORT and PCDGP <strong>in</strong> table 19.8. The dots <strong>in</strong><br />

figure 20.1d are not scattered around randomly—someth<strong>in</strong>g is clearly go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on between these two variables. As the per capita GDP rises, the rate of <strong>in</strong>fant<br />

mortality falls, but the shape of the relation is nonl<strong>in</strong>ear.<br />

Nonl<strong>in</strong>ear relations are very common <strong>in</strong> the real world. The relation<br />

between age and the number of people one knows has a peaked shape, like an<br />

upside-down V. Early <strong>in</strong> life, the number of friends, k<strong>in</strong>, and acqua<strong>in</strong>tances is<br />

small, but that number grows as you get older. This relation is l<strong>in</strong>ear and positive.<br />

The longer you live, the more people you get to know ...uptoapo<strong>in</strong>t.<br />
