Figure 20.1d is a plot of INFMORT and PCDGP in table 19.8. The dots in
figure 20.1d are not scattered around randomly—something is clearly going
on between these two variables. As the per capita GDP rises, the rate of infant
mortality falls, but the shape of the relation is nonlinear.
Nonlinear relations are very common in the real world. The relation
between age and the number of people one knows has a peaked shape, like an
upside-down V. Early in life, the number of friends, kin, and acquaintances is
