About the Author<br />

H. <strong>Russel</strong>l Bernard (Ph.D., University of Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, 1968) is professor of<br />

anthropology at the University of Florida. He has also held faculty positions<br />

at Wash<strong>in</strong>gton State University and West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia University and has taught<br />

or done research at the University of Athens, the University of Cologne, the<br />

National Museum of Ethnology (Osaka), the University of Michigan, and the<br />

Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Dr. Bernard works with <strong>in</strong>digenous people<br />

to develop publish<strong>in</strong>g outlets for works <strong>in</strong> previously nonwritten languages.<br />

He also does research <strong>in</strong> social network analysis, particularly on the<br />

problem of estimat<strong>in</strong>g the size of uncountable populations.<br />

His book (with Jésus Sal<strong>in</strong>as Pedraza) Native Ethnography: A Mexican<br />

Indian Describes His Culture (Sage, 1989) won special mention <strong>in</strong> the 1990<br />

Chicago Folklore Prize. Other books <strong>in</strong>clude Technology and Social Change<br />

(Waveland, 1983, 2d ed., edited with Pertti Pelto), three editions of <strong>Research</strong><br />

<strong>Method</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>Anthropology</strong> (Sage, 1988; AltaMira, 1994, 2000), Data Analysis<br />

with MYSTAT (McGraw-Hill, 1995, with W. Penn Handwerker), Handbook of<br />

<strong>Method</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Cultural <strong>Anthropology</strong> (AltaMira, 1998), and Social <strong>Research</strong><br />

<strong>Method</strong>s (Sage, 2000).<br />

Dr. Bernard received the 2003 Franz Boas Award from the American<br />

Anthropological Association for his service to the discipl<strong>in</strong>e. He was editor of<br />

the journals Human Organization (1976–1981) and American Anthropologist<br />

(1981–1989), and he founded and currently edits the journal Field <strong>Method</strong>s.<br />

He has worked s<strong>in</strong>ce 1987 <strong>in</strong> NSF-supported research methods tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs.<br />

He is one of the founders of the International Social Network Conference<br />

and serves on Board of Directors of the Human Relations Area Files.<br />
