who have no prior symptoms. Prevention of ischemic cardiovascular events is key. Risk factors, including<br />

age, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol,<br />

are used by physicians to identify individuals likely to have an ischemic event. The National Cholesterol<br />

Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III) classified lipid results and established<br />

guidelines for lipid testing and patient management.<br />

Interpretation: <strong>Mayo</strong> Clinic has adopted the NCEP ATP III classifications, which are included as<br />

reference values on <strong>Mayo</strong> Clinic and <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Laboratories</strong> reports (see Reference Values).<br />

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines for lipids (total<br />

cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL cholesterol) in adults ages 18 and up:<br />

TOTAL CHOLESTEROL<br />

Desirable: or =240 mg/dL<br />

TRIGLYCERIDES<br />

Normal: or =500 mg/dL<br />

HDL CHOLESTEROL<br />

Low (removed HDL): 60 mg/dL<br />

LDL CHOLESTEROL<br />

Optimal: or =190 mg/dL<br />

NON HDL CHOLESTEROL<br />

Desirable: or =190 mg/dL<br />

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and National Health and Nutrition Examination<br />

Survey (NHANES) has set the following guidelines for lipids (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and<br />

LDL cholesterol) in children ages 2-17:<br />
