Interpretation: When the CD4 count falls below 500 cells/mcL, HIV-positive patients can be
diagnosed with AIDS and can receive antiretroviral therapy. When the CD4 count falls below 200
cells/mcL, prophylaxis against Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia is recommended.
