adequately researched. At first glance it seems that his contribution
to spiritual life was insignificant.
However a more systematic study of his life and works raises a
different picture. Apparently Rav Vitkind was a talented and
successful preacher and speaker on Biblical topics. He brilliantly
related to current problems in an original and convincing fashion.
He benefited all by his identification of the central problems of the
Jewish people in the diaspora, of their need for fundamental
change, and the challenges of socialism and communism which
He was aware of the importance of traditional Jewish education
and worked towards its advancement with a focus on the challenges
of the day. From these perspectives, Rav Vitkind can be seen as an
between the two world wars. The sermons along with his collected
writings represent a complete world view, and his literary corpus
proposes a historical and philosophical view, as well as an original
philosophy of education.
His murder at the hands of the Nazis abruptly ended his
philosophical and educational life’s work.
