assumption that one can educate or direct toward any truth. These<br />

questions and others arise in practice from the proper relation to<br />

truth in an era of multiple narratives. From an examination of the<br />

approach of one of the Hassidic intellectual giants, Rabbi Zadok<br />

Hacohen Rabinowitz (1823–1900) from Lublin, the author attempts<br />

to give an answer to the question of education and truth in the postmodern<br />

era. Like many worthy expositors before him, Rabbi Zadok<br />

wrestled with the question that arose around the Biblical figure of<br />

Yaakov Avinu (Jacob our Father) as a purported “man of truth”.<br />

Rabbi Zadok’s complex and unusual attitude to this figure is<br />

evident throughout his writings, and points to a unique outlook in<br />

grappling with truth in an ambiguous world.<br />

Educational Aspects of the Outlook of Rabbi<br />

Yitzhak-Zeev Soloveitchik<br />

Rabbi Yitzchak-Zeev Soloveitchik (1886–1959) is regarded as one<br />

of the most influential leaders of the haredi (ultra-Orthodox)<br />

section within the Jewish people, in the last generation. Educational<br />

matters occupied an important part in his public activities, both<br />

while he served as the Rabbi of Brisk, as well as later, from the<br />

year 1941 when he moved to Jerusalem.<br />

The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 was greeted<br />

with mixed feelings by the haredi community, and Rabbi<br />

Soloveitchik made an effort to formulate a firm haredi conception<br />

to enable his community to face up to the many changes that were<br />

taking place in the world surrounding them. In common with other<br />

haredi leaders, Rabbi Soloveitchik, tried to emphasize the<br />

constitutive ethos of the haredi way of life. This, in accordance<br />

with the traditions of past generations, should consist in the
