304 LOS LAZOS DE LA CULTURA ro no objeto de estudio, razón de que las perspectivas ante la lengua estuvieran alejadas de su propia realidad. A partir de su presencia en Puerto Rico, el español isleño adquiere valor en sí mismo y en su originalidad y carácter, por lo que su estudio abrió los horizontes de la investigación científica. Bien es verdad que la geolingüística de Navarro es cosa del pasado, pero cada estudioso es hijo de su tiempo y sólo en él tiene sentido el método que practica. Lo que importa señalar es que Navarro no dependió de la observación espontánea, de la intuición ni de las preocupaciones didácticas o ideológicas, sino que partió de un modelo riguroso de análisis, de un plan de trabajo cuidadosamente diseñado, que representa un eslabón, excepcional, en la cadena continua de esfuerzos hacia la mejor comprensión del español de Puerto Rico. Esta obra, en su presente y para su futuro, fue el resultado de una relación cultural surgida en la coyuntura histórica de acercamiento entre dos países, España y Puerto Rico, comprometido, el primero, con lograr la elevación cultural colectiva como garantía del progreso, y decidido, el segundo, a lograr este progreso dentro de su tradición cultural. El programa de trabajo y esperanza propuesto en España por Santiago Ramón y Cajal y secundado por tantos otros intelectuales, como Federico de Onís en 1912, llegaba a Puerto Rico, en los años veinte, limpio de retórica y dispuesto a la colaboración. Lo traía, con su voluntad sin fisuras, un grupo de personas creyentes en el valor personal y en el compromiso genuino; lo recibían en Puerto Rico otras, de igual talante y actitud, al margen de diferencias profundas y de motivaciones diferentes. Pocas veces se dan estas coincidencias personales. Este intercambio cultural, en momentos críticos para ambos países, trascendió su presente y garantizó apoyos y confianzas mutuas para el futuro. Gracias a esta relación cultural sin precedentes, Navarro Tomás pudo hacer, de la lengua oral y popular de Puerto Rico, el objeto de estudio a salvo de prejuicios. Después de haberse refugiado en la ficción costumbrista o de haberse instalado en el palco de la resistencia discursiva, con Navarro Tomás, la lengua popular del país, recogida paso a paso por costas y montaña, ocupó la escena sin disfraces y a cuerpo limpio, con la verdad de sus pronunciaciones, de sus giros sintácticos, de sus préstamos, de sus piruetas léxicas, de su vitalidad provocadora. El científico la buscó y la sorprendió tranquila, en su mestizaje robusto y ajena a toda teoría, instrumento hábilmente compartido por rurales y urbanos, cultos y letrados: todos guares en la expresión y el acento. A principios del siglo XX, el español que Navarro recogió metódicamente por todo el territorio isleño, no pertenece, en la fibra de su esencia, a ningún registro o grupo en particular del país, ni se desvía, tampoco, de la savia hispánica; es la voz acordada en que todos los puertorriqueños pueden reconocerse, desde sus propias diferencias. Si el reconocimiento de afinidades esenciales es un reactivo de la identidad compartida, la literatura del país es, hoy, su mejor testimonio.
