similar U.S. and European civilian air patrol<br />

units, paramilitary schools, and semiprivate fly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

clubs. Most of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was fairly basic:<br />

takeoff and land<strong>in</strong>g, local area fly<strong>in</strong>g, and basic<br />

air navigation. In .Iuly 1960, six Yak-IS (MA-X)<br />

Soviet s<strong>in</strong>gle-eng<strong>in</strong>e propeller tra<strong>in</strong>ers were<br />

added to the program and provided some additional<br />

experience. The Air Sports Club probably<br />

served as a center for select<strong>in</strong>g high-potential<br />

candidates for advanced tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g outside of<br />

Vietnam, most likely <strong>in</strong> the Soviet Union and<br />

other select Warsaw Pact countries.i" North<br />

Vietnamese aviation cont<strong>in</strong>ued its slow expansion<br />

through 1960. A number of new aircraft were<br />

acquired and four new airfields were opened. The<br />

DRV military air arm further expanded dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Laotian airlift of 1961-62. A number of IL-14<br />

transports and MI-4 helicopters were delivered or<br />

turned over by Moscow to Hanoi.<br />
