up a major military effort <strong>in</strong> Quang Tri Prov<strong>in</strong>ce,<br />

and Khe Sanh seemed to be the l<strong>in</strong>chp<strong>in</strong>. By late<br />

January, the communist front command element,<br />

known to the Americans as the Khe Sanh<br />

Area Front (KSAF), now controlled all three divisions.<br />

In late January, it was rumored that Vo<br />

Nguyen Giap visited the frontal command post.<br />

This led to later rumors of a B-52 raid <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />

take out the post with him <strong>in</strong> it.' Actually, there<br />

was a B-52 raid on the KSAF command post on<br />

30 January. However, there never has been any<br />

<strong>in</strong>dication that Giap was at Khe Sanh, just some<br />

suggestive circumstantial evidence." In fact, the<br />

commander of the new PAVN Front, known as<br />

the "Route 9 Front," was Major General Tran Qui<br />

Hai, who previously had been the assistant chief<br />
