CU) Even as French Union and Viet M<strong>in</strong>h<br />

troops grappled <strong>in</strong> the battleground of Dien Bien<br />

Phu, delegations from France, the Viet M<strong>in</strong>h, the<br />

People's Republic of Ch<strong>in</strong>a, the Soviet Union.<br />

Great Brita<strong>in</strong>, the United States, the Republic of<br />

Vietnam, and the K<strong>in</strong>gdoms of Laos and<br />

Cambodia, were meet<strong>in</strong>g at the Far Eastern<br />

Conference <strong>in</strong> Geneva, Switzerland, to settle both<br />

the Korean Conflict and Indoch<strong>in</strong>a War. The<br />

Korean War phase began on 26 April. On 8 May,<br />

the day after the French surrender at Dien Bien<br />

Phu, the Indoch<strong>in</strong>a phase of the conference started.<br />

CU) If ever a conference was begun with all its<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> participants determ<strong>in</strong>ed not to compromise.<br />

Geneva was it. The French. militarily<br />

humiliated at Dien Bien Phu, publicly refused to<br />

enterta<strong>in</strong> any suggestion for a possible partition<br />

ofVietnam. They argued along the American l<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

espoused ma<strong>in</strong>ly by United States Secretary-of<br />
